DE NIEMS, FRANCE
— Thousands of
French |
 |
farmers and a few Jean-Paul Belmondo fans took
to the streets of France’s most
famous garment district yesterday to
protest GMO, the newest line of blue
jeans from beleaguered American
jeanmaker Levi Strauss.
Chanting “Deux…quatre….six…huit…
we want less room back in the seat,” the protestors clearly caught Levi
executives with their pants down.
“Damn those farmers,” said Len
Greenberg, Levi EVP of Marketing
for the Americas, Europe, Asia and
A Small Part of Africa. “First they
tell us they want something a lot
more snug. Then they want something
with a skosh more room. Now
they’re upset because they’re not
tight enough. Where’s Buddy Lee
when you need him?” Told that Buddy
worked for another jeans maker,
Greenberg laughed. “Smart guy.”
At presstime, the French farmers
were urging a boycott of all
American denim products except
for Tommy Hilfiger’s popular Viva
La France! tote bag, free with a
30-franc purchase at all Gallerie
Lafayette stores. |
